Tax season is here, and Californians can use their personal income tax refund to refuel the hungry in their community. Here in California, nearly 1 in 8 people face food insecurity every day. “Food insecurity” is the occasional or constant lack of access to the food one needs for a healthy, active life. For the 4.9 million Californians struggling with food insecurity, hard choices must be made between buying food and meeting such basic needs as housing, medicine, transportation, or childcare. Food insecurity disproportionately affects children and seniors.
Tragically, 1 out of every 4 California kids may go to bed hungry each night. While the impact of hunger is not always obvious, its effects are present in nearly all of our communities and classrooms.
Thankfully, California allows taxpayers to make a voluntary, tax-deductible contribution to the Emergency Food for Families Fund in the “Contributions” section of their state tax return. In 2017, almost 20,000 Californians checked off the Voluntary Contribution box on the state tax form 540, raising over $362,262.
The Emergency Food for Families Fund was established in 1998 to support California food banks. Since that time, the fund has raised millions of dollars. The program uses an existing infrastructure managed by the California Department of Social Services to efficiently distribute the tax check-off contributions and federal disaster food to all 58 counties.
1) On the California Income Tax Form 540, there is a line labeled Emergency Food for Families Fund under Voluntary Contributions.
2) Write in an amount greater than one dollar that you wish to donate. If the state owes you money, the contribution will be deducted from your refund. OR
3) If taxes are owed, you simply add the desired donation amount to your check payable to the State.
If you employ someone to prepare your taxes we encourage you to instruct the preparer to include a donation to the Emergency Food for Families Fund.
