Economic Indicators of Hunger & Poverty

Our Economic Indicators Dashboard maps out several income-related measures that may help approximate or predict potential need for food assistance. These include population living under the California Poverty Measure, the Real Cost Measure and several multipliers of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL), all available on our Poverty by County tab.

For food banks looking to pinpoint high-need communities, our Poverty by Zip Code tab includes a zip code-level heatmap that displays the population living under 100%, 200%, and 300% of the FPL; food banks can select the FPL multiplier that best reflects the minimum income needed in their area. Our Zip Code Selection Map can be used to see the total population under these FPL multipliers across multiple zip codes.

Because housing is one of the largest fixed expenses that can compete with food purchasing, housing cost burden and rent affordability gaps are included on our Housing tab.

Our Employment tab includes unemployment trends, major industries and occupations, and average wages, which are available for most counties and select metro regions. This data can highlight potential need in a community; for instance, a spike in unemployment may lead to an influx of new clients at the food bank, while workers in low-paying occupations may benefit from targeted outreach.
