The House Budget Committee passed a budget resolution today that proposes deep cuts to the programs that are the lifeline of low-income Californians. This includes a potential $10 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, called CalFresh in California, which is our primary tool to fight hunger. As food banks, we know all too well the limits of the charity network to meet even the current need for food and other basic income supports. These cuts would worsen hardship for the people we serve and abandon our nation’s bipartisan commitment to ending hunger. The California Association of Food Banks calls on all California members of Congress to reject these cuts or any action that would slash the safety net. Instead, we should protect and strengthen the programs proven to lift our families out of hunger and poverty.
