The Farm Bill is the leading legislative driver of our nation’s food and farming policy. The Farm Bill is reauthorized approximately every 5 years and sets food and agricultural policy that provides a safety net for our country’s agricultural producers and helps our low-income communities put food on the table.

The California Farm Bureau Federation has also indicated their interest in organizing a Farm to Food Bank tour with a member of Congress to highlight the value of the food system and the collaborations between food banks and farmers around the state. (December) The Farm Bill Conference Report was released December 10, full text is available here. Our joint statement on the Report with California Food Policy Advocates, County Welfare Directors Association, and Western Center on Poverty and Law is available here.
(September) House and Senate Farm Bill Negotiators have stated that Congress will not pass a final farm bill before the current bill expires this Sunday, September 30th. While staff will continue to work through the differences between the two bills in October, members of the House are headed back to their districts at the end of this week and a final bill is not expected to come together or move until a lame duck session after November midterm elections. SNAP, TEFAP, CSFP, and FDPIR or other hunger programs will continue to be funded and operate as usual. In addition, our messaging on the Farm Bill will be the same and we will need to keep up the drumbeat on SNAP while Farm Bill negotiators meet in the fall. Look for further communication from CAFB and our national partners at FRAC, CBPP and Feeding America for more Farm Bill updates.
