Annual Member Meeting Highlights

October 14, 2014

On Sept 25, nearly 50 food bankers representing 31 member food banks converged in Oakland for CAFB’s Annual Membership Meeting held at the Alameda County Community Food Bank. This year’s theme was “IMAGINE…” and CAFB staff set about challenging members to think big and share their dreams for future food banking and anti-hunger work.

A flash mob took over the podium before the program could start, with CAFB staff dancing – or attempting to dance – to a familiar Beatles’ tune. Things calmed down once the presentations began, but classic songs from the 60s and 70s livened up the proceedings throughout the day. (If you’re interested in learning the award-winning choreography to CAFB’s surprise dance routine, you can check it out here)

CAFB staffed shared our top accomplishments for the past year and unveiled our shiny, brand new CAFB website.

We also bid farewell to three wonderful Board members:

  • Bonnie Weigel (Food Share of Ventura County)
  • Bruce Rankin (Westside Food Bank)
  • Mark Lowry (Community Action Partnership of Orange County)

And voted in five sure-to-be-just-as-wonderful new ones!

  • Nicole Suydam (Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County)
  • Dave Martinez (Placer Food Bank)
  • Larry Sly (Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano)
  • Tom Tenorio (Community Action Agency of Butte County)
  • Shirley King (Napa Valley Food Bank)

Following lunch and a short yoga break (pictured at top), the meeting continued with an in-depth presentation by Kim McCoy Wade on the importance of engaging counties in increasing CalFresh participation. Teri Olle of the SF-Marin Food Bank followed with a detailed look at the San Francisco Food Security Task Force’s recent success advocating for food security funding through the city’s Board of Supervisors (slides from both presentations are available here). Allison Pratt of ACCFB rounded out the day with a powerful presentation looking at the impact of recent cuts to the SSI/SSP program (slides available here).

The day concluded with an open discussion and a few final cups of coffee before our members headed back home. Thanks to all who made it out to Oakland and thanks again to ACCFB for hosting. We look forward to seeing everyone next year!
